The Hughey Family
Background
Our family was created on September 11, 1996. The family started with just the three... Ryan, Emily, and Courtney. I guess the saga that is the Hughey Family starts in North Carolina. Ryan and Emily met during Ryan's time in the United States Marine Corps. The two had a mutual friend who introduced them. Ryan's first impression was that Emily was a strong woman who had a very beautiful daughter, Courtney. Shortly after their first meeting, which consisted of Ryan and the mutual friend delivering a baby swing, Ryan found out that Emily was married to another Marine. So much for getting to know this beautiful lady and her daughter. This was not the case though. A few months later, while involved in a half-hearted relationship with another of Emily's friends, Ryan had the good fortune to have his then current girlfriend move in with Emily. After many visits to the house and a few long talks during the more boring parts of the weekend, Ryan found out that Emily's husband was a real loser. Kyle, the husband, did not seem to think that it was cool for him to have a family so he didn't think he should have to take care of them. Ryan, not being one to miss an opportunity to get off base and talk to the civilized people, took Emily up on an offer to move in with her family and his girlfriend. In return Ryan would help with the bills. Even without the offer to move in Ryan would have helped with the family's expenses, because he had the money and didn't need it. So it happened that Ryan took up residence with the Barnes Family and Ashley, his girlfriend. This arrangement worked for a little while, but then Ryan found himself not really interested in Ashley anymore. The more time that Ryan spent in Emily's presence the more he became attached to both her and her daughter. Kyle, being the man that he was, constantly volunteered for missions away from the home. This left Emily and Courtney to fend for themselves literally, as Kyle would often go to a local bar in whatever city he happened to be in and spend an entire paycheck on a nights entertainment. Eventually, it became a race between Emily and Kyle. At midnight on payday the check would deposit and if Emily could beat Kyle to the ATM then she could have money for bills and food. |
 This
did not last long before Emily decided to take drastic measures to
remedy the problem. Her plan was to move back to Texas and file
for a divorce. At this same time Ryan was in the process of
getting rid of a now annoying Ashley, who had told all of his friends
and his parents that she was pregnant. This was not at all
true. Events began to progress rapidly from there. Ryan
kicked Ashley out of Emily's house, with her approval, at about 2:00
am. The resulted from a confrontation about Ashley lying to Emily
and telling her that she had been pregnant with Ryan's triplets but had
miscarried due to stress.
With Ashley out of the house, and Kyle off playing soldier Ryan took up the role of provider for both Emily and Courtney. Within weeks Courtney had become very attached to Ryan and had begun to take afternoon naps with him on the couch. The closeness of her daughter and her roommate was not lost on Emily. She took every opportunity to let Ryan know that his help both financially and emotionally, one can only talk to a 3 year old so many hours out of the day, were greatly appreciated. Soon it was time for Emily to carry out her plan for divorce. She loaded everything she could in her car and set out for Texas. Ryan moved back onto the base. Ryan had told Emily that she was to call him as soon as she got to Texas so that he would know that she and Courtney were alright. During the two day wait Ryan began to realize just how much Emily and Courtney meant to him. When the call came in that she had made the trip fine and that she was living with her father, Ryan was both relieved and saddened. The degree to which he missed the two led him to buy a car and travel to Dallas, Texas on an extended weekend. The trip was 24 hours if you drove straight through; Ryan made it in 16 and 1/2. After three months and several hundred dollars in long distance calls Ryan received word that Emily had gotten the divorce. This was when he asked her to move back to North Carolina and live with him. Emily agreed and the move was made. Almost immediately Ryan and Emily began to talk of plans of marriage. Three weeks into the discussion they had most of the plans worked out. It would be a family wedding and they would take a cruise for their honeymoon. Continue the saga here. |
